Brazilian armoured turret ship Riachuelo 1883-1910


Build with a hull of steel and sheathed with wood and yellow metal.. Launched at Samuda on 7 June 1883, rebuild at La Seyne, France in 1893-1895 and broken up in 1910. With a displacement of 5,610-6,100 (full load) were her dimensions 305’ (between perpendiculars) x 52’x 19’8” or 92,96 x 15,85 x 5,99 metres. The vertical compound steam engines and 10 cylindrical boilers supplied 7,300 ihp allowing a speed of 16,7 knots while she had a coal bunker capacity of 400-800 tons. Designed to be full rigged. Her crew numbered 367 men and the original armament consisted of 2x2-9.2” guns, 6x1-5.5” guns, 15x1-1pdrs and 5x1-14” surfaced torpedo tubes. After being rebuild the armament consisted of 4x1-9.4” guns, 6x1-4.7” guns and 6x1-4,7cm guns. The armour consisted of a 7-11’ thick belt while the turrets and conning tower were protected by 10”.
