British naval bases on the Azores according to the Dutch newspaper De Courant Het nieuws van den dag dated 30 August 1940

Horta, Azores, 28 August. The tidings that England intended to hands on the Azores and the Canary Islands caused large commotion, especially at the Azores considered the fact that England for a long time claimed that these islands were more or less British territory. Well informed circulars said that since the attacks on Gibraltar became heavier and more dangerous for British warships to stay there England was searching for another option. The Azores and the Canary Islands were now considered as being good alternatives. Although still Portuguese were there plans made for a modern British naval base at Azores suitable for larger units.
