According to a note in this magazine was at the yard of Armand, Bordeaux , France the steam corvette Baian built for the Russian navy. After several successful trials in the roads, she departed 3 October towards the sea for more trials with the engines. She was a corvette of the 1st class, armed with 4 long 60pdr and 12-20 dm shell guns. Her engines delivered 300 hp. The masts and spars were comparable with those of a 36-gun frigate. This was a hybrid ship, still able to be used as a sailing vessel for which purpose the screw could be lifted from the water. Her displacement was 1966 tons with as dimensions 72 (between perpendiculars)-66 (on waterline) x 11 (main timber) x 7m (hold). Armand became later famous for building ironclads.
