Brazilian transport Rio de Janeiro destroyed by rebelling cruiser Republica according to the Dutch newspaper Middelburgsche Courant dated 9 November 1893

Republica

An item reported that the Brazilian ambassador at Montevideo denied that the transport Rio de Janeiro was lost despite what Argentinean newspapers wrote. She had 1,100 soldiers on board to bring them from Peixoto to Santos when she came across the rebelling cruiser Republica which latter ordered her to surrender. Both ships prepared for battle and until sunset pursued the Republica the Rio de Janeiro and finally entered her causing her sinking with all men on board.(1)
