French naval documents stolen according to the Dutch newspaper Het nieuws van den dag voor Nederlandsch-Indië daily edition dated 18 April 1905

The French department of navy was according to this newspaper again in panic. What the earlier panic caused isn’t reported but now was discovered that 12 documents dealing with the building of submarines had disappeared. The minister officially announced that his predecessor was responsible for this missing. The documents contained secret technical information why French submarines were better as those of other navies. Some newspapers blamed the former minister Pelletan why he allowed a foreign engineer to read the documents necessary to be able to improve the submarines built by French factories. Now it seemed that this engineer was an Englishman. A discussion in the French parliament was expected.(1)

Note
1. This must be Charles Camille Pelletan (28 June 1846 Paris-1915) which was a quite criticized minister of marine in June 1902-January 1905 by several naval experts. As minister he was member of the left wing of the Republican, Radical and radical-Socialist party. Except from politician he was also journalist.
