Dutch naval strength according to the Dutch newspaper Algemeen Handelsblad dated 2 October 1850

An anonymous person referred in an item that according to the constitution the Dutch navy had to be of a sufficient strength to be able to defend the Netherlands. Between 1847-1850 were several ships still standing on stocks considered as being part of the active service. Of these ships were launched 1 ship of the line, 1 small frigate, 2 corvettes, 1 brig, 4 schooners of schooner brigs while at the moment there were still on stocks 2 ships of the line, 1 small frigate, 2 corvettes and 3 small brigs. Laid down and launched were further 1 small schooner and 3 steamships and one steamship still on stocks. In the meantime however there were also ships sold to be broken up namely 2 small frigates, 1 large corvette, 4 brigs (the sale of a fifth one already announced), 1 schooner, 1 training steam vessel and a gunboat. In other words the naval strength was decreased considerable. The newspaper claimed that in the period 1825-1830 there were at least 12 ships of the line and 33 frigates available. It was absolute necessary that in peacetime the navy was taken care of and strengthened, in case of war was time and money lacking.
