Japanese cable ship Nanyo Maru attacked by pirates according to the Dutch newspaper Het nieuws van den dag voor Nederlandsch-Indië dated 3 October 1932

Nagasaki 1 October reported that the cable ship Nanyo Maru of 3,000 tons belonging to the Japanese Department of Traffic was attacked near the island Changchih by Chinese pirates with twenty large and small fishing vessels. The Japanese crew succeeded with using machine guns and revolvers in forcing the pirates to retreat.(1)

Built in 1923 with yard number 1026 by Osaka Iron Works, Osaka, Japan for the Japanese government. Built of steel. Gross register tonnage 3.610 tons, net register tonnage 1.844 tons, under deck 3.236 tons and as dimensions 105 x 13,4 x 9,2 metres or 345 (between perpendiculars) x 44 x 21 (loaded) feet.. Call sign JCFD. Machinery consisted of coal fuelled 2-3 cylinder triple expansion steam engines delivering 276 nhp allowing a speed of 10 (cruising)-12 (maximum) knots. Sunk by American submarine USS Pogy (SS-266) around 100 miles east of Formosa/Taiwan on 20 February 1944.
