American troop transport USS General John Pope (AP-110) 1942-2012


Laid down at the shipyard of the Federal Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company in Kearny, New Jersey on 14 July 1942, launched on 21 March a year later by Mrs. Charles P. Gross, purchased on 2 July 1943 and commissioned on 5 August, decommissioned on 12 June 1946 and transferred to the War Shipping Administration which handed her over to the US Army where she became the USAT General John Pope. When the Korean War broke out she was again mentioned on the navy list on 20 July 1950, since 1955 in reduced operational stated until she on 5 September two years later was added to the National Defense Reserve Fleet stationed at Olympia. On 17 August 1965 was she again commissioned as a troop transport however with a civilian crew. After being decommissioned don 1 May 1970 she was again handed ober to the National Defense Fleet but laid up at Suisun Bay until she was stricken on 26 October twenty years later. In 201o arrived she at Brownsville, Texas to be broken up.

With a displacement of 11.450 long tons/ 20.175 ftons were her dimensions 622’7”x 75’6”x 25’6”. The geared steam turbines supplied via twin shafts 17.000 hp allowing a speed of 21 knots. Her crew numbered 465 men and she was armed with 4x1-5”guns, 4xquad 1.1”guns and 20x1-2cm guns. She was able to transport 5.142 soldiers.
