Japanese second class cruiser Sendai 1923-1943
Building at the Mitsu Bishi shipyard, Nagasaki begun on 16 February 1922, launched on 30 October 1923 and completed on 29 April 1924. Sister ship were the Jintsu and Naka. With a displacement 5.195 long tons/5.278 tons (standard)-5.595 long tons/5.685 (full load) tons were the dimensions 520’1 (“waterline)-532’0” (over all) x 46¾ x 15’9”15’10½” and a depth of 29‘0“. The armament consisted in 1924 of 7x14cm/5.5” guns, 2-7,7cm/3” anti aircraft guns, 8-61cm/24” torpedo tubes and 56 mines and in the thirties of 7-5.5” guns, 3-3”/13 pdr gun, 2 machine guns and 8-24” torpedo tubes. Further more could these cruisers carry with her 1 wheeled plane and since 1933 a floatplane for which purpose they had a flying-off platform and since 1933 a catapult. The sides were amidships protected by 2.5” armour and the conning tower with a similar thickness and further more a 1.1“ thick deck.. The four geared turbines and 16 Kampon boilers supplied 90.000 shp (design) allowing while driving four screws a speed of 33 knots. The fuel bunker capacity was 350 (normal)-1.500 (maximum) tons. Destroyed in the battle of Empress August Bay on 2 November 1943.
