Questions in the British Parliament dealing with the naval conference according to the Dutch newspaper Algemeen Handelsblad dated 9 April 1930

An item dated London 8 April reported that in the British House of Commons commander Southby (1) the same afternoon the premier asked if the intention of the conference (2) was to achieve more than if a pact between the five powers. Premier Ramsay MacDonald (2) denied this and added that the cabinet did everything to achieve a treaty.

1. Sir Archibald Richard James Southby 1st Baronet (8 July 1886-30 October 1969) of the Conservative Party, between 1927-1947 member of parliament, appointed to the rank of commander in the British Royal Navy.
2. Probably he referred to the London Naval Treaty which was signed on 22 April 1930 (ratifications on 27 October) between England, Japan, France, Italy and the USA with the intension to regulate (future submarine) warfare and to limit naval shipbuilding.
3. James Ramsay MacDonald (12 October 1866 Lossiemouth-5 November 1037 at sea while on board of the Reina del Pacific), Labour Politian, prime minister in the periods 22 January-4 November 1924 and 5 June 1929-7 June 1935.
