An item reported that the US Maritime Commission stated that on 1 January a total tonnage of 926.000 tons of American tankers was laid up which was 62% more as in 1953. The American tank fleet was around 65% larger as before the Second World War and consisted 442 private owned tankers with a total tonnage of nearly 7.000.000 tons which was 215% of the world tanker fleet.
