An item referred to the magazine N.&M. Rec. dated 2 August 1933 reporting that since 1920 all French battleships were rebuilt. The Lorraine (1) however was the most intensive rebuilding between 1930 and 1931 and Brest resulting that she almost achieved her original trial speed. Her sister ships Bretagne and Provence were even more intensive rebuilt and were in fact end 1934 almost complete new ships. Their horsepower increased from 30.000 to 45.000 hp and the speed from 20 to 23-24 knots, ability to shoot over a larger distance, better anti torpedo protection etc. New boilers and turbines with a lesser weight supplying 50% more power were ordered and if the ships were lengthened with another 10 metres their speed would increase.
