Spanish merchants at Havana, Cuba fitted out warships to act against Columbian privateers according to the Dutch newspaper De Curacaosche courant dated 9 November 1816

An item dated New Orleans, USA 11th September reported that according a tiding van a mister living on Balize [Belize?] that the captain general of Cuba fitted out a small squadron to act against the privateers of Cartagena, Columbia active of Havana and the Gulf of Mexico. He was able to do this with money supplied by merchants of Havana. For this purpose he bought three former American privateers, namely the Young Wasp of 500 tons and pierced of 22 guns, the brig Reintous of 385 tons and pierced of 20 guns and the schooner Chasseur [in Spanish service the Cazador] of 275 tons and pierced of 18 guns all extra ordinary fast sailing ships. Together with a traditionally sloop of war and a brig were to depart for sea mid August. It was suggested that one of these ships was involved in a gun fight with the schooner USS Firebrand.
