French submarine Thon 1904-1914


Of the Naïade-class, laid down at the arsenal at Toulon, France on 18 March 1904 and already stricken in May 1914. Class specifications were a displacement of 70,5 (surfaced)-73,6 9submerged) with as dimensions 23,7 x 2,2 x 2,6 metres or 77’11’x 7’5” x 8’6”. Their crew numbered 12 men. Speed 7,20 (surfaced)-4,10 (submerged) knots. The armament consisted of 2-45cm/17.7” torpedoes placed in external cradles.(1)

1. The first Dutch submarine O1 or Luctor et Emergo built between 904 -1906 at the shipyard Kon.Mij. De Schelde, Vlissingen, Netherlands using an Electric Boat Company Holland-design had a displacement of 105 (surfaced)-124 (submerged) tons and as dimensions 20,42 x 4,08 x 2,79 metres although armed with just one 18” torpedo tube in the bow. Further more was she also faster especially when submerged.
