American screw steam frigate USS Minnesota passing the Sunda Strait according to the Dutch newspaper Java-bode dated 28 October 1857

An item reported that the American steam frigate USS Minnesota captain S.F. Duponte which coming from Cape of Good Hope, South Africa on 21 September Sunda Strait passed bound for China. On board was minister Reed. In the so-called Meeuwenbaai were coal and water loaded.(1)

1. Laid down at the Washington Navy Yard, Washington, D.C., USA in May 1854, launched on 1 December 1855, sponsored by Susan L. Mann, commissioned on 21 May 1857, finally sold to Thomas Butler&Company, Boston, USA in August 1901 and afterwards burned at Eastport, Maine for her iron fittings. With a displacement of 3.360 tons/3.307 long tons were her dimensions 264’9” x 51’4” x 23’10’. Speed 12,5 knots. A crew numbering 646 men and an armament consisting of 2010”/25cm guns, 28-9”/23m guns and 14-8”/20cm guns.
