Executing of the Portuguese naval shipbuilding program according to the Dutch magazine Marineblad dated 1933 no. 2

An item reported that the orders for building of 2-864 tons and 2-2.110 tons for the Portuguese navy was given to a British yard, probably as suggested by the author of the decreased value of the pound sterling. The Dutch shipyard of the Kon. Mij. De Schelde at Vlissingen, Netherlands had also been very interested in obtaining the orders.


For account of the Portuguese navy were in England the two gunboats Gonçalo and Perdro Nunes built. Both gunboats were especially built for use in the Portuguese colonies. Length x beam was 81,5 x 10,85 metres. Speed 16,5 knots. The armament consisted of 3-12cm guns and 3-4cm anti aircraft guns.

An item reported that the Portuguese navy was at that moment no longer interested in building a 5.100 ton large aircraft transport but decided instead to built a 16.21 ton destroyer and 1-864 ton submarine, both to be built in England. The cabinet increased the naval program with another destroyer to be built in Portugal and even a fourth submarine.
