Executing of the Portuguese naval shipbuilding program according to the Dutch magazine Marineblad dated 1932 no. 4

The Dutch magazine supplied quite a lot of details dealing with the Portuguese warships built in Portugal and elsewhere using as source the magazine Revue Maritime dated April 1932.


An Italian shipyard was to built the avisos’2nd class Alfonso d’Albuquerque and the Bartolomeu Diaz, which were double screw well built and good compartmented ships to be fitted out with 2 turbines with reduction clutch delivering 8.000 hp and a maximum speed of 21 miles. With a speed of 12 miles a range of 9.0000 nautical miles. Displacement of 2,100 tons and as dimensions 99 x 13,5 x 7 metres. The armament consisted of 8-12cm guns, 2 fore and 2 aft with 180 shells for each gun, 2-7,6cm anti aircraft guns with 300 shells for each gun and 4-4cm anti aircraft machineguns with 1.500 cartridges for each machinegun, 1 floating plane and 40 mines. Complete fire control equipment with 2 rangefinders.


The twin screw aviso‘s 2nd class Pedro Nunes and Gonzalo Vehlo were built by Vickers Armstrong, John Thornycroft and Hawthorn Leslie, fitted out with 2.000 hp turbines and a speed f 16,5 miles. Dimensions 81,70 x 10,7 x 5,18 metres. Displacement 1.174 tons. Oil bunker capacity 335 ton. Range 6.000 nautical miles. The armament consisted of 3-12cm guns (2 fore, 1 aft) and 2-4cm anti aircraft machineguns. At the Portuguese navy yard was the 1.017 ton aviso Gonzalos Zarco being built, to be fitted out with 2 diesels engines, horsepower 2.400 hp and a speed of 16 miles. The armament consisted of 2-12cm guns and 2-7,6cm guns.

The two destroyers Vouga and Lima (the Douro and Tejo were also to intended to be built) were ordered at Yarrrow, England and were to be built under supervision of this British firm at Lisbon, Portugal by the Sociedad de Construcoes e Reparaçoes Navalis. The destroyers were of the improved British Acasta-design with as dimensions 95,15 x 9,5 metres and a displacement of 1.621 tons. Two turbines with a horsepower of 33.000 hp allowing a speed of 36 miles. The armament consisted of 4-12cm guns (140 shells for each gun). 3-4cm anti aircraft machineguns (1.500 cartridges for each machinegun), 8-53,3cm torpedo tubes, 2 depth charges launchers with 12 depth charges (each with 35 kilo explosive), 2 searchlights with a diameter of 25cm and one of 90cm and 20 mines of 200 kilo TN.. For the (machine) guns and tubes was a complete fire control system available.




Seaplane tender Sacadur Cabral

The aircraft transport Sacadura Cabral was ordered at the Italian shipyard Catieri Rinniti dell’Adriatico. It was a twin screw ship with 2 turbines, 4 water tube boilers, 14.000 hp and a speed of 22 miles. With a speed of 12 miles was the range to be 10.000 nautical miles. Dimensions 124 x 17,5 x 10 metres and a displacement of 5.100 (other magazines claimed 6.100 ton)/ The armament was to consist of 4-12cm guns of the fore ship port and starboard and aft 20-12cm gun, for each guns 200 shells available and further more 4-4cm anti aircraft machine guns with each 2.000 cartridges and a complete firi control system. Fitted out with 1 catapult and able to take 14 planes with her. 

The two submarines Delfin and Espadarte were ordered at the Ital shipyard Cantieri Rinnitti dell’Adriatico. Dimensions 63 x 6,90 x 5,90 metres and a displacement of 770 (surfaced)-795 (submerge). Horsepower 2.300 (surfaced)-1.100 (submerged) hp and a speed of 16.5 (surfaced)-9 (submerged) miles. Their armament consisted of 1-10,2 cm gun (with 150 shells), 1-25mm anti aircraft machinegun (with 2.500 cartridges) and 6-53,3cm torpedo tubes (4 bow, 2 stern) with 12 torpedoes. 

Total costs of this naval program was 3.210.000 pound sterling. According to the R.U.S.I.-journal was for 796.000 pound sterling of parts ordered at Vickers and Whitehead had to deliver 50-50,7cm torpedoes. 

According to the magazine Le Yacht dated 28 May 1932 were the Italian shipyards forced by the decreased value of the pound sterling forced to break the contract signed with Portugal and to pay back 61.000 pound sterling paid in advance and 10% compensation. Again were tenders asked for the Saccadura Cabral of 5.100 tons, the cruisers (earlier called aviso’s) Alfonso de Albuquerque and Barolomeu Diaz of 2.100 tons and the 770 ton submarines Delfin and Espadarte.
