Portuguese Guadiana or Douro-class destroyers 1913-1936


This class was replaced in the 30’s by a new Douro-class/
Douro (pennant D), launched at the Estaleiro Real, Lisbon, Portugal on 22 January 1913, commissioned on 6 June 1913 and discarded on 23 June 1927.
Tâmega (pennant), launched at the Estaleiro Real, Lisbon, Portugal on 21 October 1922, commissioned on 19 August 1924, since the end of the 30’s mainly used as training ship and discarded on 2 September 1942.
Guadiana (pennant G), launched at the Estaleiro Real, Lisbon, Portugal on 21 September 1914, commissioned on 10 May 1915 and discarded on 4 January 1936.
Vouga (pennant V), launched at the Estaleiro Real, Lisbon, Portugal on 19 April 1920, commissioned on 31 December 1930 and sunk during an amphibious operation during a military rebellion in the island Madeira on 16 May 1931.
With a displacement of 515 (standard)-660 (full loaded) tons were the dimensions 73 x 7,16 x 2,34 metres of 240 x 23.6 x 7.8 feet. The two shaft Parsons turbines and 3 yarrow boilers supplied totally 11.000 hp allowing a speed of 20 knots and with a speed of 15 knots a range of 1.6000 nautical miles. The crew numbered 80 men. The armament delivered by Armstrongs-Elswick consisted of 1-10cm/4” gun, 2-7,6cm/3” guns and 2x2-46cm/18” torpedo tubes. He Dutch magazine Marineblad 1913/1914 no. 2 mentioned 3 screws, displacement of 670 tons. Fore and aft was 1-50cm large search light placed.
