Portuguese gunboat Patria 1903-1931 and Chinese Fu Yu 1931-1937


Her building was financed with money collected by Portuguese emigrants living in Brazil. Launched at Arsendal de Marinha de Lisboa, Portugal on 27 June 1903, completed in 1905. Sold at Macao in 1931 to China to be used in the so-called Canton squadron, renamed Fu Yu and finally sunk by aircraft of the Japanese aircraft carriers Ryujo and Hosoho off Canton in the end of September 1937. With a displacement of 626 (normal)-750 (full loaded) tons and as dimensions 60.0 (between perpendiculars)-63,0 over all) x 8,30 x 2,50 metres or 196.8 x 27.5 x 8,4 feet. One coal-fired vertical machinery and 4 boilers supplying 1.890 hp allowing a speed of 16,7 knots. Range with a speed of 10 knots was 580 nautical miles. Two screws. The armour consisted of a 12mm thick deck. Her crew numbered 88 (Portuguese service)-118 (Chinese service) men. The armament consisted in 1930 of 4-3.9” guns, 6-3pd guns.
