An item referred to the magazine Marine Rundschau dated February 1920 reported that the American submarine USS V 4 was launched on 10 November 1927. Her size and fitting out as a minelayer attracted much attraction. With a surfaced displacement were her dimensions 116,1 x 10,2 metres. Horsepower 2.800 hp and a speed of 15 (surfaced)-8 (submerged) knots. The armament consisted of an unprotected 1-15,cm gun, 4 torpedo tubes and 60 mines. Crew numbered 88 men (included 8 officers). Large range and good personnel accommodation. The still on stocks submarines V 5 and V 6 were with a displacement of more as 3.000 ton even larger. (1)

The Argonaut, laid down at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, Kittery, Maine, USA on 1 May 1925, launched on 10 November 1927, commissioned on 2 April 1928 and sunk by Japanese destroyers off Rabaul, New Britain [nowadays Papua New Guinea] on 10 January 1943. The armament consisted of 4-53,3cm/21” torpedo tubes, 2-1,016metres/40” mine laying tubes and 2-15,2cm/6” guns placed on deck.
