French seaplane tender Commandant Teste 1927-1950


Laid down by FC Gironde, Bordeaux, France on 6 September 1927, launched on 12 April 1929, commissioned on 18 April 1932, gunnery training ship since June 1941, scuttled at Toulon, France to prevent capture by the German forces on 27 November 1942, salvaged by Italian forces on 1 May 1943, captured by German forces in September 1943, sunk during an allied aircraft attack on 18/19 August 1944, salvaged in February 1945, first decided to repair and modify her, not executed by used as a store ship for US made equipment and sold to be broken up on 15 May 1950.

With a displacement of 10.000 (standard)-12/134 (full load) tons and as dimensions 167 x 27 x 6,7metres or 547’11”x 88’7” 22“. The machinery consisted of 2 Schneider-Zoelly direct-action geared steam turbines and 4 Loire-Yarrow super heated water tube boilers (2 oil, 2 coal-oil fuelled) allowing a speed of 21-22 (trials) knots. With a speed of 18 knots was her range 2.000 nautical miles. Fuel oil bunker capacity 1.163 tons and coal bunker capacity 700 tons. Crew numbered 644 men. Armour consisted of a 3cm/1.2”-5cm/2” thick belt, a 2,4cm/0.9”-3,6cm/1.4” thick deck with the conning tower protected by 8cm/3.1’ thick armour. The armament consisted of 12x1-10cm/3.9” Mle. 1927 guns, 8x1-3,7cm/1.5” Mle. 1925 anti aircraft guns and 6x2-1,32cm.0.52” Mle. 1919 anti machine aircraft guns. She could carry 26 seaplanes for which she was fitted out with 5 catapults and 5 recovery cranes. Original designed armament consisted of 13,86cm/5,5” or 15,5cm/6.1” guns and 7,5cm/3” anti aircraft guns, but ever she was laid down was chosen for a new gun arrangement.
