Japanese minelayer Itsukushima 1928-1944


Building ordered under the Fiscal year 1923, laid down by the Uraga Dock Company, Uraga, Japan on 2 February 1928, launched on 22 May 1929, commissioned on 26 December 1929, torpedoed and sunk by the Dutch submarine H.Ms. Zwaardvisch (P322) in the Java Sea while being towed for repairs being damaged by Allied bombers to Surabaya, Dutch East Indies on 7 October 1944 and officially stricken on 7 October 1944.

With a standard displacement of 2.080 tons and as dimensions 100 (between perpendiculars)-104 (waterline) x 11,83 x 3,22 metres or 330-341’ x 38’10” x 10’7’.The machinery consisted of 3-shaft diesel engine and 3 boilers supplying 39.000 shp allowing a speed of 17 knots. With a speed of 10 knots was her range 5.000 nautical miles. Crew numbered 221 men. The armament consisted of 3-14cm/5.5”50 3rd Year Type naval guns, 2-8cm/3,14” 40cal 3rd Year Type naval guns and 500 Typ4 5 naval mines.
