Australian cabinet feared for loss of battle cruiser HMAS Australia according to the Dutch newspaper De Tijd dated 5 December 1914


An item dated Berlin, Germany 5th referred to a tiding of the maritime correspondent of the Corriere della Sera that since considerable time nothing was heard for the Australian battleship Australia. The cabinet even feared that she was destroyed by an explosion.(1)

1. An Indefatigable-class battle cruiser and not a battleship. Her building was ordered on (9 December 1909 at the yard of John Brown&Company at Clydebank with building number 402, laid down on 26 June 1910, launched on 25 October 1911, commissioned on 21 June 1913, decommissioned on 12 December 1921 and scuttled on 12 April 1924.
