German submarine SMS U-9 1908-1919


Building ordered in 15 July 1908, launched at the Kaiserliche Werft, Danzig, Germany on 22 February 1910, modernized and refitted in 1916, training ship since April 1916, surrendered to England in 26 November 1918 and broken up at Morecambe, England in 1919. Able to dive tot a depth of maximum 50 metres within 50-90 seconds.

Double-hulled. With a displacement of 493 tons (surfaced)-611 tons (submerged) and as dimensions 48 (pressure hull)-57,38 (over all) x 3,65 (pressure hull)-6 (over all) x 3,13 x 7,05 (height) metres or 157.6-188.3 x 12-19.8 x 10.3 x 23.2 feet. The machinery consisted of 2 6-cylinder Körting and 2-8 cylinder Körting two stroke paraffin motors with totally 1.000hp and 2 SSW electric motors with 1.160 hp resulting with the 2 screws in a speed of 14,2 (surfaced)-8,1 (submerged) knots. With a speed of respectively 5 and 14 knots was the range 80 and 1.800 nautical miles. The crew numbered 29 men (included 4 officers). The armament consisted of 4-45cm/17.7” torpedo tubes (bow 2, stern 2) for which 6 torpedoes were carried, 1-3,7cm/1.5” Hotchkiss gun, 1-5cm/2” L.40 quick firing gun since 1915, 1 machinegun and between March-December 1916 12 P-mines for which she temporarily was fitted out with 2 rails.
