Japan possessed two fast tankers for long distance naval operations according to the Dutch magazine Marineblad dated 1938 no. 5

An item referred to the magazine Marine Rundschau dated March 1938 reporting that Japan owned a fleet of 10 oil tankers of which especially the Taka saki and the Tsuragi saki were very interesting/ With a displacement of 12.000 tons was their speed 19 miles and armed with 4-12,7cm guns excellent suitable for accompanying the navy on large distance operations.
