Part of the Santa Maria-class consisting of the Reina Sofia. Santa Maria, Victoria, Numancia, Navarra and Canarias, preceded by the Baleares-class and succeeded by the Álvaro de Bazán-class. Laid down by Empresa Nacional Bazan [Navantia, S.A.] on 12 October 1987, launched on 19 July 1989 and commissioned on 30 October 1990. Homeport Naval Station Rota. Based on the American Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigates.

Displacement 2.897 (light)-3.668 (standard)-4.244 (full load) tons and as dimensions 138,8 x 14,3 x 8,6 metres or 455.5 x 46.11 x 28.3 feet. The machinery consisted of 2 Geenral Electric LM2500-30 gas turbines supplying 41.000shp/31 MW via one shaft to the screw allowing a speed of 30 knots. Armament consists of 1-7,6cm/62 cal OTO Melara Mk 75 naval gun, 1 or 2x3-32,4cm Mk 32 torpedo launcher using Mark 46 torpedoes, a Mk13 Missile launcher firing RGM-84 Harpoon SSM and SM-1 MR Block VIB SAMs., 2cm-12barrel Meroka anti aircraft CIWS system and 1 SH-60 Seahawk LAMPS III helicopter.
