Building ordered on 31 July 1954, laid down at the Portsmouth Naval Dockyard, USA on 15 February 1955, launched on 15 April 1958, commissioned on 30 August 1958, decommissioned on 25 May 1964, stricken on 1 Augustus 1970 and nowadays museum ship. Designed to act against the Soviet Union Pacific coast. Part of the Grayback-class consisting of the Growler and Grayback.
With a displacement of 1.440 (dead)-2,110 (light)-3.550 (full load) tons and as dimensions 96,3 (waterline)-969,9 (over all) x 7,9 (waterline)-8,2 (extreme) x 5,7 metres or 316-318 x 26-27 x 19 feet. The machinery consisted of 3 Fairbanks-Morse diesels and 2 Elliott electric motors allowing a speed of 15 (surfaced)-12 9submerged) knots. Crew numbered 87 men (including 9 officers). Armament consisted of 4 Regulus I or 2 Regulus II missiles stored in 2 missile hangars and 8-63,3cm/21” torpedo tubes (6xbouw, 2xstern). In fact were the Regulus I cruise missiles successors of the German Second World War V-1 flying bomb. While the Regulus I and II was not a real success chose the US Navy for the Polaris ballistic missile launched from submarines (SLBM).
