Russian minesweepers sighted at Lepaya, Latvia according to a CIA report dated 29 May 1953

German so-called Vorpostboote

An item reported that frequently Russian T-361 and T-462 class motor minesweepers sighted coming and leaving the naval and merchant harbours of Lepaya, Latvia. Former German M-40 class fleet minesweepers very similar to the Russian T-725 minesweepers were stationed in the winter harbour of Lepaya. Their radar screens were in the same position fixed as the one on board of the T-719 class. Autumn 1951 were sometimes fleet minesweepers of another type seen off Lepaya. A second item reported that even as late as 1952 fleet minesweepers were sighted coming and going from the naval harbour of Lepaya and sometimes manoeuvring in the winter harbour apparently. Former German KFK (Kriegsfischkutter) type were not used by the navy at Lepaya.(1) The State Fishing Enterprises (Gosmorlov) used these vessels for fishing purposes. Their gun platforms were removed.

Note
1. Naval trawlers used for anti submarine warfare and guard tasks (as so-called Vorpostboote) along the coastline and after the Second World War as minesweepers and fishery vessels. Modified version for war purposes of a merchant fishery vessel.
