Large number of Russian warships sighted in the harbour of Leningrad, Russia according to a CIA report dated 15 March 1957

An item reported that in the harbour of Leningrad [nowadays St. Petersburg], Russia several warships were sighted. Except for a number of smaller vessels were 3 cruisers lying anchored and a fourth one docked in a floating dry dock in the east corner of the harbour, 15 destroyers lying anchored, 12 MTB’s hauled out on the mole and finally 8 submarines lying near a sailing ship.

Every type was separate described. The cruisers area of similar design adding that the docked cruiser filled and the whole dock and had a very great draught. More for details could not be supplied lacking observation time. The destroyers were not similar but of different types. Three of four were somewhat larger than the others and seemed to be flush decked (the other had raised foredecks)with a very pronounced deckline sheer. All destroyers were two funnelled, steam up and just painted. The observant saw still people painting. The motor torpedo boats were of the common type, the submarines of different types.
