Japanese cargo ship (ex-Atlantic City 1920-1936, Penbryn 1936-1939, Matuyama Maru 1939-1940) Hiyama Maru 1940-1942


Gross register tonnage 6.173 tons, deadweight 9.720 tons and as dimensions 125.5 x 17.7 x 10,2 metres or 412 x 55 feet x 10 (light)-27.6 (loaded). Fitted out with 1-3 cylinder triple expansion 402 nhp steam engine. Single screw. Speed 11 (normal cruising)-12,5 (maximum) knots. With a speed of 11 knots and an oil fuel bunker capacity of 1.887 tons was her range 13.600 nautical miles. Official number 42840. Built with yard number 533 by Ropner Shipbuilding&Repairing Co. (Ropner&Sons Ltd.), Stockton-on-Tees in 1920. As Atlantic City of Sir Wm. Reardon Smith&Sons Ltd., Cardiff, England. As Penbryn of Ambrose, Davies&Matthews, Brynymor S.S. Co., since 1973 of Ho Sien Ching, Tsingtao, China and as Matuyama Maru of Matsuda Kosen K.K., Tokyo, Japan and finally of Nissan Kisen K.K. Tokyo. Torpedoed by the American submarine USS Seadragon (SS-194) on 12 July 1942 around 15 miles west of Qui Nhon, Vietnam.(1)
