Chinese light cruiser Ning Hai 1931-1937 and Japanese Ning Hai/Oshima 1937-1944

Japanese cruiser Yubari

Of the Ning Hai-class consisting of the Ning Hai and Ping Hai, based on the Japanese experimental cruiser Yubari. Building ordered in 1930, laid down by Harima Shipyards, Aioi, Hyogo, Japan on 20 February 1931, launched on 10 October 1931, completed on 30 July 1932, commissioned on 4 September 1932, sunk during a Japanese air attack on 23 September 1937, wreck in Japanese hands on 5 December 1937, salvaged by on 4 May 1938, as a training vessel on 11 July 1938 and coastal defence ship but in fact used as a barracks hulk at Sasebo, December 1943 towed to the Harima Shipyards and converted into an escort vessel (a kaibikan), completed pm 1 June 1944 and commissioned as the Ioshima, torpedoed and sunk by the American submarine USS Shad on 19 September 1944 on the geographical position 33°40′North and 138°20′East and stricken on 10 November 1944. Displacement 2.526 tons and as dimensions 110 x 12 x 4 metres or 360 x 39 x 13 feet. The reciprocating engises and 4 coal fired boilers supplied via 3 shafts 10.579hp/7.889 kW allowing a speed of 23,2 knots and with a speed of 12 knots a range of 5.000 nautical miles. Her crew numbered 361 men. The armour consisted of a 2,5cm/0.98”-7,6cm/2.99” thick belt, a 1,9cm/0.75”-2,5cm/0.98” thick deck with the gun turrets and conning tower protected by r2,5cm/0.09” thick armour. The armament consisted of 3x2-14cm/5.5” cal 50 guns, 6-8cm/3,15” cal 40 guns firing 7,62 cm/3” shells, 8-2 pd Vickers anti aircraft guns, 10 Vickers machine guns, 2x2-53,3cm/21” torpedo tubes and 9 depth charges. Fitted out with a small hanger and crane to hoist and store two seaplanes.
