An item dated Cadiz, Spain 5 March reported that the Spanish galleon l’Oriflame departed in February 1770 towards Lima, Peru was wrecked on 27 July off the coast of Chile with a cargo estimated 12 million [piasters?]. The edition dated 6 April reported that on the homeward voyage her crew numbered 300 men and further a large number on passengers on board. During the voyage sickness harassed the crew and there were hardly enough sailors available to handle the ship. On 27 July were the coast line and the Spanish ship Le Gaillard sighted. The Le Gaillard was informed about the desperate situation on board resulting in sending a boat with 40 men and some victuals. High seas and bad weather prevented the boat arriving at the l’ Oriflame. The latter was soon afterwards smashed by a heavy gust of wind against the coast and broke in 3 parts. There were no survivors and hardly anything of the cargo could be saved.
