Japanese aircraft scouting Aleutian Islands according to the U.S. Joint Intelligence Committee. Daily summary dated 27 May 1942

An item reported that an unidentified aircraft flew low over the Kiska Naval Station on the Aleutian Islands on 24 May. The plane was described as a singe motor biplane identical to what the Japanese used for naval reconnaissance. The Joint Intelligence Committee commented that she was possible launched of a Japanese submarine which had been sighted in Alaskan waters. In the summary of 28 May however it stated that this Japanese seaplane was probably be launched from a converted seaplane tender while usually these ships carried such planes. It was the first time that Japanese aircraft were seen above the Aleutians
