Boiler exploded on board of American cruiser USS New York according to the Dutch newspaper De grondwet dated 31 January 1899

An item reported that on 27th January 8 men were working in a steam boiler on board of the American cruiser USS New York lying in New York when steam from another boiler was lead in their boiler. Six men were heavily wounded, one of them J.T. Shea died of his wounds. The wounded men were brought to the naval hospital.(1)

Armoured cruiser, preceded by USS Maine, succeeded by USS Brooklyn, building ordered on 7 September 1888, contract awarded on 28 August 1890, laid down by William Cramp&Sons, Philadelphia, USA with yard number 268 on 30 September 1890, launched on 2 December 1891, renamed Saratoga on 16 February 1911, Rochester on 1 December 1917 and finally scuttlds on 24 December 1941 in Subic Bay, Philippines.
