British warships HMS Mauritius, Jamaica, Comet, Morecambe Bay and Mounts Bay changing stations according to the Dutch newspaper Het nieuwsblad voor Sumatra dated 19 May 1949


An item dated London, England 7th reported that the British 8.000 tons cruiser HMS Mauritius left Devonport, England via Malta towards the Far East. (1) The cruiser Jamaica at that moment cruising in the Indian waters was via Pearl Harbour, Hawaii to arrive at Hong Kong on 21st May. (2) To the British naval forces in the Pacific were the destroyer HMS Comet (3) and the frigates Morecambe Bay (4) and Mounts Bay (5) to be added.

Of the Fiji-class light cruisers, preceded by Dido-class, succceeded by Minotaur-class, building ordered on 20 December 1937, laid down by Swan Hunter, Tyne and Wear, United Kingdom on 31 March 1938, launched on 19 July 1939, commissioned on 4 January 1940 and arrived on 27 Mach 1965 at Inverkeithing to be broken up.

Of the Fiji-class light cruisers, preceded by Dido-class, succceeded by Minotaur-class, building ordered under 1938 Naval Programme, laid down by Vickers-Armstrong, Barrow-in-Furness, United Kingdom on 28 April 1939, launched on 16 November 1940, commissioned on 26 June 1942, decommissioned on 20 November 1957, stricken on 1960 and sold to be broken up on 14 November 1960.

3. Of the C-class destroyers, preceded by W and Z-class, succeeded by Weapon-class, laid down by Yarrow, Scotstoun, Scotland on 14 June 1943, launched on 22 June 1944, commissioned on 6 June 1945 and arrived at Troon, Scotland on 23 June 1962 to be scrapped.

4. K624. Part of Bay-class anti-aircraft frigates, preceded by Loch-class. Building ordered on 19 January 1943, laid down by William Pickersgill&Sons Ltd., Southwick, Sunderland with yard number 266 on 30 April 1944, launched on 1 November 1944, commisioned on 22 February 1949, decommisssioned on 19 November 1956, sold to Portugal on 9 May 1961, acquired on 3 August 1961, renamed NRP Dom Francisco de Almeida (F479) and broken up on 1970.

5. K627. Part of Bay-class anti-aircraft frigates, preceded by Loch-class. Laid down by William Pickersgill&Sons Ltd., Southwick, Sunderland on 23 October 1944, launched on 8 June 1945, commissioned on 11 April 1949, decommissioned in May 1960, sold to Portugal in 1961, commissioned on 3 August 1961 as the NRP Vasco da Gama (F478) and broken up in 1971.
