Lord Kitchener travelling with British cruisers HMS Isis and Dido according to the Dutch newspaper Leeuwarder courant dated 22 December 1899

An item dated Cairo, Egypt 20 December reported that Lord Kitchener (1) steamed with the cruiser Ises (2) towards Malta where he intended to go on board of the cruiser Dido (3) destined for Madeira.

Notes

1. Horatio Herbert Kitchener, 1st Earl Kitchener (24 June 1850-5 June 1916), army officer and colonial administrator. At Gibraltar he went on board of the Dunottar Castle leaving on 27 December. In South Africa he was chief of staff in practice second-in-command.

2. Of the Eclipse-class 2nd class protected cruisers, preceded by the Astraea-class, succeeded by Arrogant-class, laid down by Fairfield Shipbuilding&Engineering, Govan, Scotland on 30 January 1895, launched on 27 June 1896, completed on 10 May 1898 and sold to be broken up on 26 February 1920.

Of the Eclipse-class 2nd class protected cruisers, preceded by the Astraea-class, succeeded by Arrogant-class, laid down by LOndon&Glasgow Shipbuilding, Govan, Scotland on 30 August 1894, launched on 20 March 1896, commissioned on 10 May 1898, became a depot ship in 1912 and sold to be broken up on 26 December 1926.
