Germans claiming sinking British heavy cruiser HMS York according to the Dutch newspaper Soerabaijasch handelsblad dated 14 April 1940

An item dated Berlin, Germany 13 April 1940 reported that during a German aircraft attack the British 10.000 tons cruiser HMS York sunk off Trondheim, Norway.(1)

1. Part of the York-class heavy cruisers, building ordered on 21 October 1926, laid down by Palmers Shipbuilding and Iron Company, Jarrow, England on 16 May 1927, launched on 17 July 1928, commissioned on 1 May 1930, heavily damaged by Italian explosive motorboats at Suda Bay, Crete, Grece on 26 March 1941, grounded to prevent sinking, further damaged by a German air attack on 18 May 1941, partly demolished by the allied forces on 22 May 1941 and on 3 March 1953 was begun with breaking her up.
