In 1899 director off naval construction at Castellammare and built the battleships Benedetto Brin, Vittorio Emanuele and Naples. Promoted in 1913 to the rank of lieutenant general and president of the committee for ship projects. Ferrati (Turin, Italy 26 August 1862-Rome, Italy 18 December 1919) was in charge for the never completed Francesco Caracciolo-class battleships (8-38.1cm/15” guns). His “D’ design was to be an Italian answer on the French designs of the never realized Normandie (12-34cm guns) and Lyon (16-34cm guns)-classes and other battleship designs. With a tonnage of 33.200 tons and as dimensions 210 x 25 metres was with a horsepower of 65.000-85.000 hp a speed possible of 27 knots. The main armament consisted of 3x4-38.1cm cal 45 guns, 8x2-15.2cm guns and 20x1-10.2cm cal 50 guns. Armour was to be 23cm thick over 2/3 of her length.
