Italian armoured cruiser San Giorgio scuttled according to the Dutch newspaper De Indische courant dated 23 January 1941


An item dated London, England 21st reported that the Italian cruiser San Giorgio still in flames in the harbour of Tobruk was a 9.000 tons ship completed in 1910 and now used as coastal defence ship. Another Dutch newspaper Soerabaijasch handelsblad dated 24th published an item dated Tobruk 23rd reporting that she was sunk and 700 crew members taken prisoner of war.(1)

1. Of the San Giorgio-class, preceded by Pisa-class. Building ordered on 3 August 1904, laid down by Regio Cantieri di Castellammare di Stabia, Castellamamare di Stabia, Italy on 4 July 1905, launched on 27 July 1908, completed on 1 July 1910, scuttled on 22 January 1941, stricken on 18 October 1946, salvaged sunk while towed back to Italy in 1952.
