Former German light cruiser SMS Regensburg fitting out in France according to the Weekly Intelligence Summary No. 2 dated 15 January 1921


An item reported that the former German light cruiser SMS Regensburg (1) handed over to France and renamed Strasbourg was now being refitted at Brest, France and to be serviceable in the second quarter of 1921. Her voyage was to show the French flag in South American harbours during 2-3 months. Afterwards she was probably to replace the Jurien de la Gravière (2) as part of the Syrian Squadron.

Of the Graudenz-class, preceded by Karlsruhe-class, succeeded by Pillau-class, laid down by AG Weser, Bremen, Germany with yard number 197 on 12 November 1912, launched on 25 April 1914, commissioned on 3 January 1915, stricken on 10 March 1920, ceded to France on 4 June 1920, renamed Strasbourg, decommisioned on 14 June 1936, became a barrack ship and scuttled by German forces at Lorient as protection for the U-boat pens.

2. Laid down at Lorient, France on 15 November 1897 at Lorient, launched on 26 June 1899, completed in 1903, stricken on 27 July 1921 and broken up in 1922. Protected cruiser.
