An item dated Washington, USA the 2nd reported that the crew of the American cruiser USS Baltimore would hand over the necessary papers for claiming a compensation from the Chilean government of 2.600.000 US dollars.(1)

Protected cruiser, laid down by William Cramp&Sons, Philadelphia, USA with yard number 254 on 5 May 1887, launched on 6 October 1888, commissioned on 7 January 1890, stricken on 14 October 1937, sold to be broken up on 16 February 1942 but scuttled on 22 September 1944. The compensation was for the Chilean civil war in 1891in which she protected American citizens and interests.
