Heavy losses in the Battle of the Coral Sea according to the U.S. Joint Intelligence Committee Daily summary dated 8 May 1942

Preliminary design for an American aircraft carrier using the hull of a Lexington-class battle cruiser dated 18 February 1922

An item reported that according a press communique of the Australian headquarters of general MacArthur the American and Japanese navies battled in the south west Pacific. The Japanese navy lost an aircraft carrier and a cruiser, a second aircraft carrier cruiser were damaged. On the other hand was in a Japanese broadcast item claimed that two American aircraft carriers of the Saratoga-class and a cruiser were sunk and one cruiser heavily damaged.(1)

Note

1. Between USA and Australia against Japan between 4-8 May 1942. USA lost one fleet carrier (USS Lexington), a second one(USS Yorktown) was damaged and further more a destroyer (USS Sims) and an oiler. Japan lost a light carrier (Shoho), 1 destroyer and 3 minesweepers.
