Japan seized French merchant ships in 1942

American naval attaché at Paris, France reported in June 1942 that he was informed by a reliable source that on or about 25 May the Japanese seized seven French merchant ships which were and now operated under the Japanese flag. It were the Aramis, D’Artagnan, Cap Varella, Le Conte de Lisle, Bernardin de Saint Pierre and Persee of the Dreyfus line and one ship of the Messageries Maritime. According to a second reliable source were also the Bougainville, Ville de Verdun and a number of small ships totally 7,000 tons seized, totally 85,565 tons seized.
