Formerly known as the Oppama Naval Air Station established in 1911. The primary purpose was for advanced pilot training with as secondary purpose flight testing. At that moment were 5 squadrons of training and service types land based and seaplanes stationed to be increased by the end of that year to a number of seven squadrons.
