The American naval attache at Rome, Italy reported on 18 October1940 No. 564-40 referring to the reliable source signor “X” who reported that Sweden was building a battle cruiser of around 22,060 tons and a speed of 26 knots. Certain parts and armament were bought in Milan and optical and fire control instruments bought from Galileo at Florence. The head of the Swedish buying commission was an admiral who stayed at the Colombia Hotel in Genoa.
