American submarine USS Gudgeon (1) sunk Japanese submarine I-73 according to the U.S. Joint Intelligence Committee. Daily summary dated 29 January 1942

An item reported that the American submarine USS Gudgeon (1) attacked a Japanese I-68 class submarine (1,400 tons) on 28 January on the surface about 220 miles west of Midway.(2)

Notes

1.Tambor-class diesel-electric submarine, preceded by Sargo-class succeeded by Mackerel-class. Laid down by Mare Island Navy Yard on 22 November 1939, launched on 25 January 1941, commissioned on 21 April 1941, sunk the I-73 on 27 January 1942, declared overdue and presumably lost on 7 June 1944.

2. Kaidai type (KD6A sub-class) cruiser submarine preceded KD5 sub-class, displacement 1,814 (surfaced)-2,479 (submerged) tonnes, laid down by Kawasaki, Kobe, Japan under 1st Naval Armaments Supplement Programme of 1931 in 1934, launched on 20 June 1935, commissioned on 7 January 1937 and stricken on 15 March 1942.
