An item referred to COM 12 reporting that the Union Oil tanker ss Montebello was torpedoed and sunk by an enemy submarine on the position Latitude 35.40-Longitude 121.17 near Von Helm Rock (around 50 miles south of Monterey. Her crew used the lifeboats which were shelled by the submarine. Some survivors reached the shore. The J.I.C. commented possible the same submarine as the one which attacked the Larry Doheny.
