An item reported that four former Liberty ships were being converted by the US Navy into ocean radar station pickets classification YSAR. Their task was to realize a distant offshore radar coverage to the USA in the future stretching from the Aleutians to Hawaii and from Greenland to the Azores.(1)

1. Jane’s Fighting Ships 1958-1959 mentioned that on 28 September 1958 all Ocean Radar Station Ships or YAGR were reclassified as Radar Picket Ships or AGR keeping their names and numbers. Totally were 16 Liberty ships of the Z-EC2-S-C5 type converted as part of the Guardian-class. Originally was for the first four ships the classification District Auxiliary, Miscellaneours (YAG) hull numbers YAG-41/YAG-44 considered. The first four ships were the Guardian, Lookout, Skywatcher and Searcher with as original name ss James G. Squires respectively Claude B. Kitchen, Rafael R. Rivera and James W. Wheeler.
