In his letter dated Istanbul, 20 January 1940 No. 650 g1. reported the German naval attaché to the Oberkommando der Wehrmacht Abteilung Ausland the ships passing Istanbul coming out of the Black Sea and loaded with contraband for or chartered by the enemy. An item reported on 12 January 1940 the British cargo ship Lord Byron loaded with 105mm howitzers (other sources claiming that 24 were 155mm older French guns, 50 flaks (other sources claiming anti tank guns) mainly 37mm and some 75mm (Schneider). The 40 tanks were of small and medium type. Of the 150 machineguns were 100 light and 50 heavy, The 3 or 6 aircraft were medium sized bomber.
