Iron cargo ship Wolf 1883-1949/1950

Her building at the shipyard Kon.Mij. De Schelde at Vlissingen, Netherlandsnwas ordered on 22 September 1883 by H.E. Moss&Co., Liverpool, England, laid down on 13 October with yard number 40, in the thrushes on 13 December, plated on 1 March 1884, launched on 19 April, while berthed trial on 31 May, official trial on 14 June, delivered on 17 June and the next day started her maiden voyage with as captain Brown. As the Ernst between 1893->1913 property of Sartori&Bergen, Kiel, Germany. <1929-1933> property of the Pommersche Landwirtschaft Hauptgenossenschaft GmbH, Stettin, Germany. Next owner Werner Peters, Hamburg <1938-1950 and finally broken up. Supervisor during building engineer Jacob Janszen.

Dimensions 171’0” between perpendiculars) x 25’0’x 4’6” (fore at launching)-6’6” (aft at launching)/7’1”(fore at trial)-10’6”(aft at trial)-13’7 ¾” (loaded) x 14’2½”. Deadweight 477 tons, displacement at launching 340 tons, OBM tonnage 518 tons, gross tonnage 627 tons and net tonnage 397 tons. Water ballast hold 113 ton.
Grain capacity 36.000 cubic feet and bale capacity 35.000 cubic feet. Fitted out with very large hatches.

Fitted out with 2 cylinder compound engine no. 52 delivering 565 ihp-500ehp-90 nhp-580 hp allowing a speed of 8,5 (contract)-10,46 miles. One 4-bladed screw. Fitted out with 95 lbs. boiler no. 74, which was replaced in 1904, and donkey boiler no. 78 (delivered from England).

Contracted building costs ƒ 99.331,60. Real costs ƒ 139.681,40 causing a loss for the shipyard of ƒ 40.349,80!
Ship with inventory: ƒ 98.721,22: materials ƒ 62.251,77, laboure ƒ 25.503,16 and expenses at 43% ƒ 10.966,29.
Engine ƒ 28.307,36: materials ƒ 17.310,00, labour ƒ 7.187.82 and 53% expenses ƒ 3.809,54.
Steel built boiler ƒ 11.492,47: materials ƒ 6.902,27, labour ƒ 2.943, 12 and 56% expenses ƒ 1.647,07.
Donkey boiler ƒ 1.160,35.

The Dutch newspaper Middelburgse Courant dated 16 April 1884 reported that the launching was planned on Saturday at 15.00 o’clock. To be able to flood the slip was it necessary to decrease on the 15th and 16th the water level in the channel through Walcheren with one metre. During the launching was the wharf before the warehouses hit with her stern although she was hardly or not damaged.
